Past results do not guarantee or predict a similar outcome. Every personal injury case depends on its specific facts, evidence, injuries, insurance coverage, applicable law and other circumstances.
Atkinson Law was featured in Virginia Lawyers Weekly after two related personal injury claims arising from a serious Eastern Shore car accident resolved through mediation for a combined gross settlement amount of $1.15 million.
The feature marked an important milestone for Atkinson Law and recognised the work performed by the legal team on behalf of a mother and daughter who were seriously injured in the collision.
About the Eastern Shore Car Accident Claims
According to the clients’ account and the case information reported by Atkinson Law, the mother and daughter were travelling through an Eastern Shore intersection and making a left turn under a green arrow.
They alleged that an approaching driver entered the intersection against a red traffic signal at a high rate of speed and struck their vehicle.
The collision caused serious injuries and led to separate personal injury claims for the two occupants.
The claims ultimately resolved through mediation. The combined gross settlement amount was $1.15 million.
A settlement is not the same as a verdict or judicial finding and does not necessarily include an admission of liability. The amount also should not be interpreted as an estimate of what another car accident claim may be worth.

CALL 757-648-8579Early Investigation and Client Support
Atkinson Law became involved while one of the injured clients was still receiving hospital treatment in Newport News.
Early involvement allowed the legal team to begin evaluating:
- The circumstances of the collision
- Traffic-signal and right-of-way evidence
- The clients’ medical treatment and injuries
- Available insurance coverage
- The financial and personal effects of the crash
- The evidence needed for settlement discussions and mediation
Beginning an investigation early can be helpful when evidence, witness recollections, vehicle information or insurance records may otherwise become more difficult to obtain. It does not guarantee that a claim will settle or produce a particular result.
A Collaborative Legal Effort
Ed Atkinson worked with attorneys Bill O’Mara and John Cooper in representing the clients.
Each attorney contributed to the investigation, preparation, negotiation and mediation of the claims. The resolution reflected a collaborative effort focused on documenting the clients’ injuries and presenting the legal and factual issues involved.
Atkinson Law is grateful to the clients for placing their trust in the legal team and to co-counsel for their work throughout the matter.

What This Result Does—and Does Not—Show
The resolution demonstrates the importance of investigating a serious collision carefully, documenting injuries and financial losses, identifying insurance coverage and preparing for meaningful settlement negotiations.
It does not establish that:
- Every red-light collision will produce a similar result.
- Every serious injury case will settle for seven figures.
- Hiring a particular lawyer guarantees compensation.
- Mediation will resolve every case.
- The value of a claim can be predicted from this result alone.
Claim value may be affected by liability, contributory negligence, medical causation, injury severity, future treatment, income loss, available insurance, liens, evidence and litigation risk.
